THE FIRST BLOOD

The 17th of September 2008, 10:00 a.m. This moment is going to be an important part of Armenian deaf sport history. This is when the first whistle sounded in the hall of the Palace of Culture and Sport of the Deaf to start the duel between Yuri Kazyavkin (Belarus) and David Kazaryan (Armenia). This was the very first fight of the 2nd Wrestling Deaf World Championship. This was the moment when the tournament that had been anticipated by all the deaf community had finally really begun.

On the first day of the tournament wrestlers of the following masses had it out: 55, 66, 84 and 120 kilos. Many interesting duels had occurred at the preliminary stage already but the real excitement started at the final one, of course.

Before giving the first results and naming the champions telling about another important event is necessary. A beautiful opening ceremony was held during the break. After the grand entrance of the participants members of organizing committee, Armenian government and refereeing committee spoke to the audience. Then Donalda Ammons, the ICSD president, wished all athletes good luck and announced the official opening of the tournament. Finally, the organizing team offered the public a show: singing in sign language and Armenian native dancing to finish with.

Still, no matter how charming the Armenian girls were, the bigger part of everyone’s attention was drawn to other “dancers” – the wrestlers that had come out to fight after the break that evening.

The first golden medal of the 2nd World Championship went to Mekhdi Bakshi from Iran who had overcome Sergey Malyshevsky in a beautiful duel for the title of the best of 55 kilos wrestlers. The bronze medals were won by Onder Talaikhan from Turkey and Atila Vaida from Serbia.

Portuguese veteran Hugo Passos and Cyrill Chulkov, a young Russian, fought for the champion’s title in the mass of 66 kilos. Both opponents were strong but finally experience and perfect tactics of the wrestler from Portugal granted him victory. The bronze medals went to Zhora Grigoryan from Armenia and Madzhid Tavakoli from Iran.

The final struggle in the 84 kilos category was truly fascinating and stubborn. Meysam Dezfuly from Iran and Seyfulla Karadeniz from Turkey both had no intention of giving in. This duel was so emotionally intense it almost made the air vibrate. In the end the Iranian wrestler got luckier. The third places in this class were taken up by Vladimir Vasilyev from Russia and Andres Sehested from Denmark.

The final battle for the privilege to be called the best of heavyweights (120 kilos mass) turned out to be the most predictable, calm even. Mukhamad Nemati from Iran did his best in fighting Alexander Khaustov from Russia but repeated Deaflympics champion was stronger and didn’t even have to waste more strength than necessary. The third place in the heaviest weight class was taken by Andrey Tkachenko from Russia and Alapsian Cosar from Ukraine.
