YEREVAN, GOODBYE!

Yesterday the final combats of the 2nd World Deaf Wrestling Championship took place in Yerevan. The team event intrigue we have been talking about in the previous review vanished right after the 60 kilos mass final. Even before this combat it was clear that if Russian Hamlet Gabarev wins the gold Iranians and Turks won’t have even the smallest chance. Hamlet did what he had to do. He overcame Vitaliy Korepanov from Ukraine with Caucasian validity and confidence. The bronze medal in this category went to Mohamad Siahpoush from Iran and Erkan Karakas from Turkey.

In the 74 kilos category Rasul Daryani from Iran proved himself to be the best and overpowered Dursun Gozel in this final. This victory, though, had only let Iranians get closer to Russians but a difference in 1 point remained and there was no chance on catching up. The third places were taken by Kazbek Khugaev from Russia and Ivan Angelov from Bulgaria.

The last duel of the championship was between Ilhan Citak from Turkey and Vevender Singh from India (96 kilos mass category). The Indian athlete deserves our special attention. He had arrived only on the 20th of September after an exhausting flight from Deli to Moscow and then from Moscow to Yerevan. Needless to say, he had no time for acclimatization and recovery but experience and professionalism helped him to go as far as the final even in his imperfect condition. Still, at the final combat he only had enough strength for one period during which he fought obstinately but lost. In the second period he had stopped resisting. However, in spite of everything written above Citak remains one of the brightest wrestlers of this championship (he was number one in his category in classic style). The last bronze medals of the tournament went to Ehsan Nemati from Iran and Alan Kuchiev from Russia.

As for the team even cup, it had, as we already mentioned, gone to the Russian team which gained 63 points and left the Iranians behind (they had 62 points). The Turkish athletes have the third place (57 points).

When all the wrestling was over the closing ceremony of the 2nd World Championship took place. The organizing committee’s representatives warmly thanked all the participants and guests of the tournament. The chairman of committee Grigor Grigoryan presented the ICDS president Donalda Ammons and the FILA delegate Ender Buyukersen with souvenirs. The best wrestlers of the championship were also recognized: Hugo Passos from Portugal in Greco-Roman style and Alexander Tsoktoev from Russia in freestyle wrestling.

Thus, Yerevan says farewell to the World Cup but not to other international competitions: as soon as 2011 the Euro Wrestling Championship is going to take place here.
