22.09.2008   IN CONCLUSION

One of the many guests of the 2nd World Deaf Wrestling Championship was truly special to us: the president of International Committee of Deaf Sports Donalda Ammons. Doctor Ammons had come to Armenia from Bratislava after an exhausting and probably determining ICDS Congress. In Yerevan the first lady of deaflympic movement had no time to rest either. She observed the competitions, consulted the representatives of different countries and did tons of paperwork. In spite of her very busy schedule she had found a moment to give us an interview on the last day of the tournament.

22.09.2008   YEREVAN, GOODBYE!

Yesterday the final combats of the 2nd World Deaf Wrestling Championship took place in Yerevan. The team event intrigue we have been talking about in the previous review vanished right after the 60 kilos mass final. Even before this combat it was clear that if Russian Hamlet Gabarev wins the gold Iranians and Turks won’t have even the smallest chance. Hamlet did what he had to do. He overcame Vitaliy Korepanov from Ukraine with Caucasian validity and confidence. The bronze medal in this category went to Mohamad Siahpoush from Iran and Erkan Karakas from Turkey.

21.09.2008   THE BEAR’S AWAKE!

The most exciting event of the tournament’s third day was probably the Russian team’s powerful performance. It is no surprise, too: everybody is used to Vladimir Gorinov’s team winning. Nevertheless, this time Russian classic style wrestlers were not as good as usual (winning only the fourth place is almost a failure for this team), so the great start in freestyle wrestling was their personal Renaissance. At the end of this first day of freestyle wrestling it is Russians who are at the top in team classification even though they have only one point of advantage over Iranian wrestlers.

19.09.2008   THE IRANIAN CLASSICS

Yesterday in Yerevan volume one of the chronicles of 2nd World Deaf Wrestling Championship had been completed along with the combat of classic style wrestlers. The main annalists were surely Iranians – and they deserved it, too, winning the team event – but many other athletes had also put plenty of energy in writing this story. Armenians, for example, were excellent on the second day of the tournament.

18.09.2008   THE FIRST BLOOD

The 17th of September 2008, 10:00 a.m. This moment is going to be an important part of Armenian deaf sport history. This is when the first whistle sounded in the hall of the Palace of Culture and Sport of the Deaf to start the duel between Yuri Kazyavkin (Belarus) and David Kazaryan (Armenia). This was the very first fight of the 2nd Wrestling Deaf World Championship. This was the moment when the tournament that had been anticipated by all the deaf community had finally really begun.

16.09.2008   A FLOTILLA’S CAPITAIN

Russian national team has been the favorite at international wrestling competitions for years now. This world championship is no exception. As you probably know more than half of the Russian wrestlers are champions or prize winners of the Deaflympic Games, World and Euro Championships. This is no guarantee of victory, or course, but they are the ones most likely to win the team event along with Turkey, Iran, Ukraine and probably Bulgaria. Our guest today is the main coach of one of the headliners of this tournament: Vladimir Gorinov.

15.09.2008   ONE OF A KIND

Wrestling is one of the most complicated sports to umpire. Too much depends on the referee’s experience and qualification. The organizing committee of the 2nd World Wrestling Championship of the Deaf has done it’s best to assemble a great refereeing. Apart from the best Armenian referees the tournament will be umpired by several FILA licensed referees from other countries. Among them is Ronald Gough from the United States: a unique person, he is the only deaf referee in the world who has an international FILA license. We just could not miss the possibility to interview him.

15.09.2008   DOES HOMELAND GIVE ADDITIONAL STRENGTH?

Needless to say, this championship is very special for Armenia. An event like this is more than important for this small country that has just begun to come to life after a terrible crisis. This means that Armenian athletes will do their best and even more to save face before their public. We have talked to one of the coaches of the national team, Alexander Markosyan, a powerful wrestler in the past and a participant of the Deaflympics of 1981 in Cologne. We asked him about the chances of the Armenian national team for the upcoming tournament.

14.09.2008   THE FIRST ONE

The first participant to come to Yerevan was an American, Constantin Dzougoutov. He arrived at the capital of Armenia on the night of September the 12th. It is no surprise that this calm and confident heavyweight (Constantin’s mass is 120 kilos) was the first guest at our website’s editorial office.
